LONG BEACH, Miss. (WLOX) — Officials with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office said a man who pulled a knife on a law enforcement officer before fleeing into the Mississippi Sound is now in custody and has been charged with simple assault.
The incident happened on the beach near the border between Gulfport and Long Beach on Friday before 2:20 p.m.
Officials with the sheriff’s office identified the man as Timothy Young, 35.
They said the incident began when a law enforcement officer asked Young, who was camping on the beach, to vacate. Officials said Young then pulled a knife on the officer before fleeing into the water.
MDMR worked through the afternoon to remove Young, who was floating in the water, from the Sound, officials said. As of 7:30 p.m., Young was in custody. Officials said Young surrendered before he was arrested.
While the Young had a knife, officials said he did not harm himself or anyone else in the incident.
