After a bunch of trial and error, I found that a 4mm drill bit was a good size to use to drill the holes. I'm not sure if the size would be different on the larger filters, but 4mm worked out well for the small ones! Also, mm drill bits are hard to find in hardware stores in the US so I ordered mine online.
