Some of Brooklynâs subway stations are getting a much-needed faceliftâand in the process, a few artists are about to become famous, at least among the city's commuters. New York Cityâs Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is seeking artists to create work for five different Brooklyn subway stations, according to local news site Sunset Park Voice .
The art will be immortalized in glass or tile mosaics (materials durable enough to withstand the regular abuses subway stations are invariably subject to) and the city will provide a budget of up to $230,000. Each finalist will receive $1000 for completing a more detailed, site-specific proposal, and the winners will be eligible for a fee of up to 20 percent of that $230,000, according to the MTA.
To be eligible, you have to be in New York during the design and construction period, approximately 2016 to 2020. An experienced fabricator will be provided, so you donât have to create the tile mosaic yourselfâjust design it and oversee the project.
