Equipped with a handful of newfound abilities , Link is more capable than ever before. Although, traversing the kingdom is made much easier with the help of a mount. Luckily, herds of horses roam about Hyrule, and they can be tamed as mounts and give Link great speeds.
This is much easier said than done, though. So, how exactly do you get a horse in Tears of the Kingdom? We’ve covered the steps to help you on your travels.
In order to get a horse in Tears of the Kingdom, you’re going to need to catch one. While it’s relatively easy to spot herds of horses throughout the kingdom, it can be tough to catch one if you’re not careful. For this reason, you need to approach them slowly and quietly by crouching with the B button.
If possible, avoid startling the horse that you wish to catch and tame. Once you successfully approach a horse, press A to hop on and tame it. Horses can be a great companion, but will flee from Link or kick him if he gets too close before taming them.

Taming a horse is relatively easy once you’re able to catch one in Tears of the Kingdom. When you first hop on a wild horse, it’s going to buck in an attempt to throw you off. To tame it, repeatedly press the R button when the directive appears and calm it down.
This will use up stamina , so you may not be able to tame some horses until Link has gotten a bit stronger. Once a horse is kept calm for a period of time, however, it will begin to follow you, allowing you to control its movements. Taming a horse is crucial for using the towing harness.
When you tame a horse, you can name it and check its stats and abilities when you register it at a stable . You’ll just need to ride it over to the nearest stable and speak with the owner. There will be a fee, so come prepared, but this will let you put a saddle on your horse. There are other animal mounts, but most cannot be registered besides horses.
You can keep several horses at a stable and switch your mount when you want by returning and speaking with the owner. Each horse is unique, so taming several horses can serve you well in the long run. Not to mention, having a mount can make both travel and battle easier in your Tears of the Kingdom playthrough.
Don’t forget to keep an eye on your Pony Points. As you register horses, you can gain more, so check back to claim your next reward. This is a simple side quest, but adds more life to the game and a nice distraction from the main quest. You can also transfer your horses from your Breath of the Wild save data, I did this to get Epona and Zelda’s Golden Horse.
To release horses in Tears of the Kingdom, you must have 5 horses stored at your stables. When you bring a sixth horse back to the stable, you will have the option to release one. You can recapture the horse after releasing it.
The stables can store up to five horses. But, you can still catch and tame horses after reaching the max, you just cannot register them at the stables without releasing a horse first.
You can start the quest to get Zelda’s golden horse at the Snowfield Stables. This leads you to the Tabantha Snowfield, north of Snowfield Stables nad east of Pikida Stonegrove Skyview Tower. Look for a golden horse, which should be easy in the white snowy environment.
Catch the horse and calm it as you would a normal horse. This may take a lot of stamina, but it is worth it. Once you’ve tamed it, return to Snowfield Stables and register the Gold Horse.
