Domain Rating (DR) Explained: What It Means for Link Building

Domain Rating (DR) is a third-party metric — popularized by Ahrefs — that estimates the strength of a website's backlink profile on a scale of 0 to 100. It's one of the most common shorthand filters marketers use when evaluating where to place a guest post.

DR is calculated from the quantity and quality of backlinks pointing to a domain. It says nothing directly about traffic, content quality, or how relevant a site is to your niche — it's purely a backlink-profile score.

Treat DR as one signal among several — pair it with organic traffic estimates, niche relevance, and a look at the site's actual content before deciding a placement is worth it. A mid-DR site with real traffic and tight topical fit is usually a smarter buy than a high-DR site that doesn't match your industry at all.
