Williams won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her performance in FX’s Fosse/Verdon , but she wasn’t about to accept the honor without thanking the network for getting her everything she needed to shine in the role.
Williams began her speech by thanking her co-star, Sam Rockwell. Then, she let out the big guns.
“So the next time a woman — and especially a woman of color, because she stands to make 52 cents on the dollar compared to her white male counterpart — tells you what she needs in order to do her job, listen to her, believe her,” Williams went on. “Because one day she might stand in front of you and say thank you for allowing her to succeed because of her workplace environment and not in spite of it.”
“Matilda, this is for you, like everything else,” the actress said before she left the stage.
Matilda Ledger is Williams’s daughter with the late Heath Ledger.

As Williams said her piece, her best friend, Busy Philipps, was seen almost crying in the audience. The two also walked the purple carpet together earlier in the evening.
