Unlike many other castles in Anatolia, Kayseri Castle is built on a flat area, making it a unique example for Central Anatolia. The castle consists of two main sections: the Inner Castle and the surrounding Outer Castle (walls). While a large portion of the outer walls has been destroyed over time, a significant part of the Inner Castle has survived intact. The Inner Castle, with its surrounding walls and rectangular towers at the corners, presents a standalone structure. It underwent extensive restoration during the reign of Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat (AD 1224) to achieve its current form. During the Ottoman period, as the city’s defensive needs decreased, neighborhoods were established within the Inner Castle, and the famous Fatih Mosque was constructed during this era. The architecture of the castle combines stonework and defensive techniques from various periods.
Today, Kayseri Castle has been transformed into an important cultural and artistic center following comprehensive restoration work. The Kayseri Museum, located within the Inner Castle, houses thousands of artifacts spanning a vast period from 5500 BC to the late Ottoman era. Kayseri Covered Bazaar has a deep-rooted history dating back to the 15th century during the Ottoman period and is considered one of Anatolia’s largest covered bazaars after Istanbul. Initially built with wooden structures, the bazaar has survived numerous major fires and earthquakes throughout history, each time rising from the ashes to reach its current sturdy cut-stone form. Especially after the great fire of 1870, it acquired the modern covered bazaar appearance we see today.
The Kayseri Bedesten, located within the Covered Bazaar, serves as the “inner fortress” of the market. Believed to have been built during the reign of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in the 15th century, this special structure functioned as a secure center where valuable goods, jewelry, and important documents were traded and safely stored. Bedestens are typically distinguished from other shops by their enclosed, domed architecture, and their security was provided by special guards. The Kayseri Bedesten has an almost square layout, with entrances on all four sides and nine domes covering the interior, exemplifying orderly architecture. Its walls, constructed from alternating layers of stone and brick, reflect the period’s standards of durability and aesthetics.
