21 live architecture portfolios

Every one is a live site run by an architect in practice. Browse them, then build yours.

Every architecture website example below is a live site, run by an architect in practice, not a mockup or a best-of pick. Filter by project type, or scroll and see what stops you.

Patterns that hold across the sites on this page. The first four apply to any portfolio. The last three are specific to how architecture gets looked at.

Show fewer pieces than you want to

A portfolio is judged on its weakest entry, not its strongest. Cut until every piece would survive being the only one someone sees.

Lead with one strong image, not a menu

The first screen decides whether there is a second. A grid of thumbnails asks the visitor to choose before they know why they should care.

Put contact one click from everywhere

The moment someone decides to get in touch is unpredictable. If reaching you means going back to the top and finding a menu, some of them will not bother.

A custom domain is what makes the work findable and the address quotable. A platform subdomain reads as temporary even when the work is not.

Split the navigation by project stage, not by year

Built, in progress, competition. A prospective client scans for the work that resembles their own job, and a date tells them nothing about whether you have done it before.

Lead with the typology you want more of

Sort order is a positioning decision. Residential first if you want houses. Civic first if you want public commissions. Chronology gets you whatever you happened to do last.

Give each project its own page

Put the plans and sections next to the finished photography rather than on a separate drawings page. One hero image tells a client how a building looks. It tells them nothing about how you think.

For most practices the portfolio site is the only thing they run. These are the parts of Pixpa that do the work after someone has finished looking.

Send a project set to a client as a private gallery with proofing, favouriting and ratings, and set it to expire on a date. Useful for a site survey shoot or construction-progress images that should not sit on the public site.

An online store with zero commission

Sell prints, drawings or digital downloads from the same site. Pixpa takes no commission, so the only deduction is the payment processor's.

Competition entries, planning outcomes and practice news, published on the same domain as the work. This is the part that earns search traffic on its own, and one architectural photographer using Pixpa reports ranking at the top of organic results by working on their own SEO.

Online, it looks like a small website with one page per project. The project page carries the drawing set and the finished photography together, and the practice profile sits behind a short about page. Nearly every example on this page follows that shape, because a client reading a portfolio wants to understand how a building was arrived at and not only how it photographs.

For most routes, yes. Practices ask for one at interview, clients ask for one before a fee proposal, and schools ask for one at application. What changes is the format. A school wants a document it can read cover to cover. A client wants a link they can open on a phone during a meeting.

A portfolio is the body of work. A portfolio website is one way of presenting it, alongside the PDF booklet and the printed set. The website is the version that stays current, gets found in search and travels as a single link. Most architects keep both, and the booklet is usually cut down from the site rather than built separately.

Project pages that put the plans and sections next to the photography, a short practice profile, and a contact route that does not need scrolling to find. Past that the examples diverge, and the divergence is the useful part. A practice chasing residential work leads very differently from one chasing civic work.

There is no fixed number and the examples here vary. The pattern worth noticing is that the sites which read well cut early. A client rarely gets past the fourth or fifth project, so a weak sixth costs more than a missing one.
