Every quiz starts from the Create New Quiz page, reachable from Quizzes in the app. You pick a source, tell QuizWhiz what kind of questions you want and how many, and generate. This guide walks through each step and what to do when something doesn't work.
QuizWhiz builds questions from one of four sources, selected as tabs at the top of the page:
For PDF and Link, extraction is a separate step from generation — you extract first, review or edit what came out, then generate questions from it. For Topic and Text there's nothing to extract; what you type or paste is used directly. QuizWhiz also auto-detects the language of PDF and link content and generates questions in that language.
There's a fifth tab, Templates , which is a different mechanism entirely: it pulls ready-made questions from a premade template bank instead of generating anything with AI, so it doesn't use credits or take any generation time. It's useful when you want a quiz instantly rather than from your own material — everything below this point is about the AI-generated path.
Below the source, you choose one or more question sets — a question type plus a quantity. QuizWhiz supports five question types: Multiple Choice, True/False, Short Answer, Fill in the Blank, and Scenario (multi-part). See Question Types Explained for how each one is graded and when to pick it.
For quantity, you pick Fewer , Moderate , or More rather than typing a number — these scale automatically to how much source content you gave it (roughly 250, 125, or 75 words per question), so a short paste and a full chapter don't get the same question count from the same setting. If you want an exact number instead, choose Specify and enter it directly (up to 50 per question set). You can add multiple question sets to mix types in one quiz — for example 10 multiple choice plus 5 short answer — and each set (except Scenario) has its own Higher Order toggle that pushes the AI toward questions requiring analysis or evaluation rather than recall.
Title and category are both optional. Leave the title blank and QuizWhiz generates one from your content; category is a label you create inline to organize quizzes on your dashboard.
Generating questions with AI costs credits, scaled to how much content you're feeding in and how many questions you're asking for. Before you generate, the page shows an estimated cost next to your current balance so there are no surprises. New accounts start with a one-time bonus of free credits, enough for a handful of quizzes to get started; ongoing credits come with a paid plan — see subscription plans for details.
Once you hit Generate Quiz , the button shows a staged progress message — "Analyzing your content," then "Writing questions," then "Checking answers" — along with an elapsed-time counter. This usually takes 30–60 seconds; longer source material or a larger question count takes a bit longer, since QuizWhiz is running multiple AI calls in parallel behind the scenes. Stay on the page until it finishes — when it's done, you're taken straight to the new quiz's detail page.
Each question comes with the question text, the correct answer, and — when the AI produced one — an explanation you'll see on the results page after you answer it, alongside your own response. Multiple choice options are shuffled per generation, so the right answer isn't always in the same slot if you regenerate. From the quiz detail page you can start practicing immediately, or come back to it later from My Quizzes .
"Insufficient credits" — if the estimated cost is more than your balance, generating shows a dialog with exactly how many credits you're short, and a link to upgrade your plan. Nothing is charged and no quiz is created when this happens.
Generation failed with no questions produced — occasionally the AI's response doesn't parse into valid questions, or the underlying AI service is busy or temporarily unavailable. You'll see a plain-language error ("Service is busy, please wait a moment and try again," for example) instead of a broken quiz — no credits are deducted and no partial quiz is left behind. Try again after a short wait, or trim/simplify your source content if it keeps failing.
PDF won't upload or extract — files over 10MB are rejected before upload with the file size shown. If the file uploads but extraction fails, it's usually because the PDF has no extractable text — a scanned image with no OCR layer, for instance — or the file itself is corrupted. Try a text-based PDF, or paste the content into the Text tab instead.
Link extraction fails — QuizWhiz blocks URLs pointing at unsafe or internal addresses, and some pages simply don't have extractable article content (heavy JavaScript pages, login walls, etc.). If a link won't extract, copy the text you want into the Text tab instead.
