QuizWhiz uses credits to meter the features that call an AI model to generate something for you. Browsing, practicing, and most of the tools library don't touch your balance at all. Here's exactly what does, what doesn't, and what to do when you run low.
Every one of these draws from the same credit balance:
Quiz generation is priced by how much you're asking the AI to do: the length of your source content (or topic) and how many questions you request. As a rough baseline, about 400 characters of source material plus 30 questions costs 1 credit — shorter input or fewer questions costs less, longer input or more questions costs more. Every paid operation has a small minimum charge (0.10 credits) so a trivial request still costs something. Wherever you generate something, the page shows the estimated cost next to your current balance before you commit, so there's no surprise after the fact.
Focused Quiz and Level Up Quiz generations use this same length-and-question-count pricing as a regular quiz — a Focused Quiz targets roughly half as many questions as the quiz it's built from, a Level Up Quiz matches the original count. There's no separate charge layered on top for either.
Taking a quiz — practicing it, retaking it, as many times as you like — never costs credits, on any account, free or paid.
Most of the tools library is free too. Calculators, diagram builders, converters, and similar reference tools compute their output directly rather than calling an AI model, so there's nothing to meter. Credits are only spent on the specific AI-generation tools listed above.
A few small AI-assisted touches are also free: title suggestions, the setup wizard, and performance analysis on your results don't cost credits.
Every new account gets a one-time grant of 10 free credits the moment you sign up — no payment method required. It's enough to try quiz generation a few times before you need to think about a plan.
Your current balance shows in the sidebar any time you're logged in, next to a lightning-bolt icon. It updates immediately whenever you spend or earn credits. Before you generate something, the estimated cost for that specific request is shown alongside your available balance too, so you can see whether you have enough before you click generate.
Separately from credits: Focused Quiz, Level Up Quiz, and Bonfire Quiz are each capped to a small number of generations per week on the free plan, checked before your credit balance is even looked at. That means it's possible to have credits left and still be asked to wait or upgrade for one of these three quiz types specifically. Regular quiz generation and quiz practice aren't affected by this cap, and paid plans remove it.
If a request would cost more credits than you have, QuizWhiz stops it before it runs — you're never charged for a partial or failed generation. You'll see an "Insufficient Credits" prompt showing exactly how many credits the action needs, how many you have, and the shortfall, along with a link to upgrade.
Credits refill automatically every billing period if you're on a paid plan — subscribing sets your balance to that plan's monthly allocation, and it renews on your billing date rather than adding on top of whatever was left. Higher-tier plans include a larger monthly allocation and also remove the weekly cap on Focused, Level Up, and Bonfire quizzes.
