Why R32

Why R32

Throughout the heating and cooling industry, there's a need for refrigerants that have less impact on the environment. In order to address the Kigali Amendment's expectations, LG is shifting to R-32 refrigerant for our split systems. In comparison to the traditional R410A refrigerant, R-32 refrigerant offers several advantages that are worth considering when picking out your next HVAC solution. Around the world, governments are setting climate goals. By transitioning to R-32 refrigerant, LG aims to create solutions that align with these local and national government objectives. Here are just a few we are addressing:

When the Montreal Protocol was created in 1987, the goal was to only phase down the hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) that depleted that ozone layer.

In 2016, the Kigali Amendment was created to address high global warming potential (GWP) levels of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Aiming to reduce HFC consumption and production by 85% by 2047, the Kigali Amendment focuses on transitioning to lower-GWP refrigerants. [1]

AIM supports the phase down of HFCs by giving the EPA the authority to regulate production and consumption, promote the use of next-generation technologies, and prioritize the reclamation of HFCs while minimizing releases from equipment.

One key advantage of R-32 refrigerant is that it is a single component, not a blend. This makes it easier to service and recycle. Additionally, R-32 refrigerant requires less volume charge compared to our existing refrigerant, R410A, thanks to its higher cooling and heating performance. [2]

LG already has a successful history of using R-32 refrigerant with VRF products around the world, including Europe. Now we're bringing together our expertise to North American builders so you can bring more R-32 refrigerant solutions to your homeowners.

R-32 refrigerant is a chlorine-free, fluorocarbon with zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than alternative refrigerant options. It has a GWP of 675, or one-third of the GWP of R410A (2088 GWP), which complies with currently pending refrigerant regulations. [3]

One of the benefits of R-32 is that it doesn't contain PFAS (per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances), a substance found in other types of refrigerants. In 2023, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) placed PFAS on their chemical restriction proposal. [4]

As a single-component refrigerant, R-32 refrigerant uses fewer components compared to the other blend refrigerant options, including R454B. In addition, R-32 refrigerant requires less charge volume due to its larger amount of energy per unit volume. By using less volume and being more cost-effective, R-32 refrigerant is the most economical choice for LG.

Blends are made when two or more refrigerants with different characteristics are combined. However, R-32 refrigerant is considered a single-component material and therefore can be charged in either liquid or gas phase.

R-32 refrigerant has a discharge temperature 10-19% higher than that of R410A. [5] LG's products effectively manage higher discharge temperatures with its sophisticated controls and inverter compressors design. Now builders can take advantage of the many benefits of R-32 refrigerant for their homeowners with LG solutions and technologies as a refrigerant that reliably keeps homes warm and cool.
