The four Americans are Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Daniel Webster, and George Washington. Each CD is approximately an hour in length, bookmarked every 3 minutes for an easy return to the story after a break. The story of Abraham Lincoln begins at the beginning, in Kentucky. His family was a pioneer family that lived off the land. Abe's childhood impacted the kind of man he was to become: determined, honest, and willing to speak his mind. Each chapter focuses on a portion of Lincoln's life. As a young man, he spent time on a trading barge and visited New Orleans where he was introduced to the horrors of slavery. He returned home with the desire to change his life and the lives of others. It was then that he began studying to become a lawyer. Not long after that, he started running for various public office and, as we all know, he eventually won the Presidency. Benjamin Franklin was a character his whole life. He was the youngest of sixteen children and, because he was the youngest, his father was able to send him to grammar school. There young Ben learned that he loved reading and writing, but not mathematics. Later in his life, Benjamin Franklin became a printer, newspaper entrepreneur, and advocate for the new nation, the United States. Without his diplomatic skills, the colonies would have had a more difficult time breaking away from England. The third disk features Daniel Webster, from new Hampshire. The son of Revolutionary fighter and judge Ebenezer Webster, Daniel Webster was the ninth child of ten and the youngest boy in the family. Fortune had smiled on the family by the time Daniel was of school age, so his parents were able to send him to school. Daniel learned to read very young; in fact, neighbors came from far and wide to hear him read. Eventually, Judge Webster decided to send Daniel to Exeter Academy. With much study, he soon became a good scholar and at the head of his class in spite of his classmates, who were gentlemen's sons and cruel to this boy from humble means. Often Daniel Webster cried from the treatment he received at the hands of these young men. Still, he excelled academically, first at Exeter Academy, then with a private tutor, and later at Dartmouth College where he became a great orator. During his lifetime, Webster served as a Congressman and a famous lawyer before he eventually retired to the country, where he continued speaking as a patriot and advocate for the peaceful prosperity he believed each American should have. George Washington's life began in Virginia where bpth black and white slaves were common in Virginia and most items were homemade. Though his older, half brothers were well-educated at Appleby's in England, George was taught by Mr. Williams, a white slave owned by George's father because he had been too poor to pay for his passage to America. Mr. Washington had Mr. Williams educate his son in reading, writing, arithmetic, and land surveying. This surveyor later, as everyone knows, served outstandingly in the army and then as the United State's first President, and his service didn't end when he retired from office; he continued to advise Congress on various issues because so many people admired him. Every chapter holds some wonderful quote or anecdote about its famous American. He finds himself shipwrecked and the prisoner of captors ranging in size from 6 inches tall to 60 feet tall and of various other persuasions. But this is just the beginning of a story written, strangely enough to satirize the foolishness and vices of modern men as they were perceived at the time. No one, young or old, can ever forget the Lilliputians and the Yahoos that starred in these wonderful and riveting stories of long ago. AUTHOR Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was an Irish novelist, satirist, poet and political essayist. From a very literary family, his uncle married the daughter of a godson of William Shakespeare, Swift was very well educated, receiving an MA from Oxford University and a Doctorate in Divinity from Trinity College in Dublin. An ordained priest in the Established Church of Ireland, Swift began writing satire, inspired by his misery in his profession. Politically active, Swift incurred the enmity of enough British nobles, that his career as a minister was over. Swift began writing novels, while also writing political phamphlets promoting Irish causes. Swift's best know work, Gulliver's Travels is filled with satiric references to his current events, and was an immediate hit, written anomously, it had to be smuggled into Ireland. The Queen was not amused. COMMENTARY Reviews for Alcazar AudioWorks' production of Gulliver's Travels Terrific Narration, Very interesting story Written about 300 years ago this story has aged very well and Gulliver's adventures are event today very entertaining. Gulliver's Travels was meant to mock the hordes of books about adventurous travels released at the time which often exaggerated the dangers faced and the belitteled the intellect of the natives encountered. And so Gulliver meets giants, tiny people, horses which rule over men and people living on a floating island. In addition to the entertainment value these episodes hold it is also very interesting to see how critical Jonathan Swift was of English society and values. This criticism is never voiced by the main character directly, but surface through the discussions Gulliver has with the people he meets. The Audiobook version published by Alcazar AudioWorks features a terrific Narrator which makes the story a joy to listen to. Listener Review - Audible.com This book is written with wonderful prose and read by a very talented narrator. When I first started the book it was a wonder to sit back and just listen. The story is very imaginative as well. This must be a very early example of the fantasy genre. At most they read the cliff notes version but let me tell you, you're really missing out on a jewel if you do. The unabridged version is the only way to go and this one does an excellent job. It leaves you with conversational pieces, insight into humanity and culture that you would not have had otherwise. Not to mention that just sticking with the abridged or cliff notes you get the ""official"" interpretation but you lose the opportunity to think for your self on the dilemmas presented. The story basically follows the adventures of one guy who ends up shipwrecked on 3 different islands and with each island is presented with a unique situation. One where he ends up a giant, one where he ends up a miniature and one...well...you'll just have to find that one out for yourself. The narrator did a wonderful job bringing Swift's witty social commentary to life, and is (in my opinion anyway) one of the best readers of this book. If you thought you knew Gulliver, get ready for delightful new discoveries, from the flying island of Laputa, to the island of the Houyhnhnms. Born in Bombay, India, but raised in England, Kipling established an international reputation with his stories and verses of Indian and Army life, including such classics as The Jungle Book and Kim. In 1907, he became the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel Prize. COMMENTARY Reviews for Alcazar AudioWorks' production of Just So Stories Kipling's JUST SO STORIES are a travelogue of famous places--the Amazon, the Limpopo, the Gobi Desert, and many other well-known global landmarks. The diversity of the animals in the stories dictates that they inhabit numerous continents. In David Thorn narration listeners can appreciate Kipling's sense of humor, as well as the lesson embedded in each story. He reads all the stories with a quiet, understated cadence that lulls listeners into a different time and place. As Thorn narrates with a twinkle in his eye, each listener can easily imagine him- or herself as ""Dear Beloved,"" the recipient of these wonderful imaginings. This is a classic to be listened to again and again. Kipling takes us on a journey to the Howling Desert to learn how the camel got his hump, a Neolithic Cave to learn how the alphabet was made, and the Amazon to learn about the beginning of the armadillos amongst other exotic locales for equally legendary tales. Narrator David Thorn is up to the task of enticing the listener along for the ride and bringing the words on paper to magical life in the mind's eye of the listener. His voicing adds that touch of the exotic while not running away into overblown Disney characterization. This is terrific family-read-aloud, since it is unabridged and can save mom or dad's voice. It ought also to keep young ones entertained during long drives. Yonge taught Sunday School for 71 years and her novels express the same values and concerns she shared with her students, courage and self-sacrifice for a greater good. COMMENTARY Reviews for Alcazar AudioWorks' production of The Little Duke I like to listen to a story read aloud by a master storyteller just as much as any of my children. There is often a book-on-tape or book-on-CD playing in the background at our house when we're busy at some task like washing dishes, folding laundry, cutting and pasting and drawing and painting, anything that requires the attention of our hands and our eyes, while leaving our ears and brains free. We had read The Little Duke together when we were studying the Middle Ages, and so we were already familiar with the story. What a joy to hear it read aloud by David Thorn, whose rich voice and British accent somehow suit the tale to a ""T""! Richard's great grandson would someday become the famous William the Conqueror, but at the time this story is set, Richard is just a bewildered little boy, a pawn in the game of power, with no less than the King of France seeking to control him and the rich lands he has inherited upon the assassination of his father, the Duke of Normandy. But young Richard is not without friends and protectors... The story has all the elements that appeal to young and old alike: adventure, intrigue, knightly doings, deadly peril, and thrilling rescue. The chapters are punctuated by music and the reading goes by all too quickly - four-and-a-half hours in all - if you listen to it in one sitting. (Which we have.) Or you could break it up and listen a chapter at a time. (We've done that, too.) Through the story, Richard grows in wisdom, compassion, and understanding, and we see him go from an indulged child to a young liege lord. He learns such valuable lessons as controlling his temper and his impulses, and putting others before himself. There is quite a contrast between the spoiled, cruel son of the King of France, and the Little Duke, and the end of the story left us wanting more. This was a great story that is based on history. I listened to this one with my seven year old and we both enjoyed it! David Thorn does a nice job creating the voices of even the children. It is a story with a lot of adventure and human relationships. This was back when life was hard, even for the wealthy rulers. This book helps one understand what life was like back then. THis is not a book that is written at a dumbed down level. Charlotte Yonge wrote back in the late 1800's. She knew hew history and it was a pleasure to learn from her. COMMENTARY Reviews for Alcazar AudioWorks' production of The Age of Fable The myths of ancient Greece and Rome have been woven into Western literature over the centuries for so long that we might not even think about the origins of such common allusions as the Midas Touch or Cupid's arrows. Perhaps you've seen My Fair Lady without knowing it was based on the ancient story of Pygmalion. You may have heard a politician refer to Pandora's Box and understood his reference in a vague way, without having heard the original story. Thomas Bulfinch, a couple of centuries ago, called mythology ""the handmaid of literature,"" further asserting that literature ""is one of the best allies of virtue and promoters of happiness."" He wasn't claiming that we needed to assume a pagan worldview in order to be virtuous and happy; indeed, his Christian worldview was firmly in place, evident in the editorial comments on the material he recounts. In his effort at promoting cultural literacy, he has produced no dry and dusty reference work, but rather has endeavored to write in a way that entertains while educating. Alcazar Audioworks has produced an unabridged reading of the first fourteen chapters of Bulfinch's Age of Fable, the first volume of a three-part series. Now, if you know me, you know that the word ""unabridged"" thrills my literary heartstrings. Not only am I a reader, but I am such a reader that I hate to think of missing a single word that an author has taken pains to set down in print. In about seven hours of listening time, you'll learn the origins and attributes of the Greek gods and their Roman counterparts, followed by a series of myths as told by the ancients. There are not only the stories we've seen in picture books, like that of the greedy king who wished that everything he touched would turn to gold, and the boy who wished to drive the chariot of the Sun and pestered his father until, against his better judgment, that father gave in, and disaster followed. Bulfinch also recounts Greek accounts of Creation and Flood. It is fascinating to see kernels of Truth hidden among the chaff of details, and in our home this made for lively discussion after the listening. The younger ones were thrilled every time a familiar story, first found in picture books, was told, but they were also interested in the stories new to them. Bulfinch does not glorify his subject matter; he just tells the stories in an engaging manner, occasionally inserting a comment of his own. It was interesting to hear our listeners' opinions after various stories, how they'd heard an allusion in our reading aloud from a more recent work of literature, but not understood it until now. Of course, there's also the occasional criticism, such as, ""Those Greeks sure lack imagination. That's the third story so far where someone's been turned into a tree."" Naturally, that leads to interesting discussion of how that child would have written the story, a nice exercise to lead into creative writing time. The readers, Bobbie Frohman and David Thorn, handle their material with competence and fine expression, making it easy to listen. They take turns in the reading, which helps keep my flightier listeners' attention. Tracks are marked off every three minutes for ease of finding your place on the CD. I feel like such a sneaky mom - the kids are learning, establishing a good foundation for their later literary studies, and all they know is that they're listening to stories at lunchtime!
