The last story of the day is the most important one. A good bedtime book does more than fill the minutes before lights-out - it slows a busy little body down, wraps the day up safe, and turns the cot or the cuddle on the bed into the cosiest place in the world. The best of them become a ritual, read so many times that a two-year-old 'reads' them back to you, word for word. These are the stories made for the end of the day.

Calm, comfort and a gentle rhythm. A great bedtime book has a soothing, sleepy arc, soft and lulling language, and a reassuring ending that settles a child rather than winding them up . Look for rhyme and repetition a little one can join in with, pictures soft enough to drift off to, and a story that ends in sleep, safety or a hug. The titles below are the ones parents reach for night after night - the gentle classics and modern favourites that earn their place in the bedtime stack.

“This classic children’s book looks wonderful in its new edition and has lost none of its effectiveness as a book to lull children to sleep” Our review, by the LoveReading4Kids team

Reading the same story every night isn't boring to a small child - it's reassuring, and repetition is how they learn. Keep a few favourites within reach, let them turn the pages, and don't worry about finishing if eyes are closing. A calm, predictable bedtime story is one of the kindest gifts you can give a young reader - and one of the surest ways to grow a lifelong love of books.

Gentle, rhyming, repetitive stories that wind down rather than rev up - Goodnight Moon, Time for Bed and Guess How Much I Love You are perfect. At bedtime a soothing rhythm and a reassuring ending matter far more than plot; the aim is calm, not excitement.

Reading at bedtime builds vocabulary, soothes a child for sleep, and creates a predictable, comforting routine that helps them settle. It's also precious one-to-one time. Children read to at night tend to become keener readers - and the ritual itself is one of the best parts of the day.

Not at all - it's good for them. Repetition is how young children learn language and feel secure, and a familiar story is reassuring at bedtime. Let them choose the same book a hundred times if they like; the comfort is the whole point.

Our children's-book experts at LoveReading4Kids, informed by years of work in real schools through the Schools Reading Programme. Every pick is a human judgement about which stories genuinely soothe a child towards sleep - never a sales ranking or a 'most popular' list.
