Seven to nine is the golden window when reading clicks. Children are moving from picture books and early readers into proper chapter books, reading more and more on their own - and discovering that a story can take them anywhere. The right books at this age build fluency, stamina and, above all, the feeling that reading is a treat rather than a task.
Aim for short chapters and plenty of illustrations to keep momentum, characters around their own age, and humour or adventure to pull them along. Series are gold at this stage: once a child loves one book, six more with the same characters make the next choice effortless. Mix funny, exciting and gently moving stories so they discover the full range of what books can do.

Keep reading aloud even once they can read alone - sharing a chapter at bedtime models expression and keeps reading a shared pleasure. And let them reread favourites as often as they like; it's how fluency is built.
