Nine to twelve is the golden age of reading. A child of this age can disappear into a 400-page world for a whole weekend, argue passionately about which character was right, and come out the other side changed. These are the books that hook a reader for life - the ones grown-ups still name decades later as 'the book that did it'. Get this age right and you've given a gift that lasts.
Real stakes and big feelings. By now a child wants a story that takes them somewhere - adventure, magic, mystery or another world entirely - with characters they'd follow anywhere . This is the home of the great series, where finishing one book means seven more await, and of the standalone novel that makes a child cry for the first time over fiction. Let them read above and below their 'level', keep a few books on the go, and never make reading feel like homework. The aim is a lifelong habit, not a reading log.
