Longlisted for the 2017 Klaus Flugge Prize | This is a truly beautiful book, and big too – though there’s still scarcely room for its central character, a huge, lumbering giant. He fills whole pages, dwarfing trees, animals and even mountain sides. Despite his size and strength though, readers will feel sorry for the giant who in his enthusiasm for pulling up trees and smashing rocks destroys the landscape around him, leaving him completely alone.
Fortunately, it’s not too late to put things right. There’s a powerful message about the need to care for the environment here but lessons too about friendship. Sophie Ambrose’s artwork is simply stunning, and this is a book to treasure. ~ Andrea Reece

With their serene and gentle colours, the illustrations of The Lonely Giant are full of detail and interest. Sophie Ambrose is a highly talented newcomer to the picture book scene with this her debut book
Sophie Ambrose is a graduate of the BA Illustration course at Kingston University. A rising talent in the world of illustration, Sophie was highly commended in the 2013 Macmillan Prize for Children's Illustration and has had her work exhibited at Foyles and the Science Museum. Her artwork has also been commissioned by a number of clients including Elle magazine, American Express, Carlsberg, Safeway and British Bakeries.
She lives in London.
