David and Lynne Roberts transfer the story of Sleeping Beauty to the 1950s in this stylish book, and put a unique spin on the story. Their Sleeping Beauty is a girl called Annabel, who lives with her two aunts. A true child of the 50s, Annabel loves sci-fi and spends hours dreaming of the future.
There’s something of Bette Davis in the witch, wonderfully malevolent in an emerald green dress tightly nipped in at the waist, and killer stilettos, a sharp contrast to Annabel’s plump smiling aunts. After her thousand-year sleep Annabel is woken by an equally lively young girl (no princes in this story) and they dash off to explore the future.
Told with élan, modishly mid-century – the poisoned needle is a record player stylus – the story is as magical as it’s ever been. ~ Andrea Reece
Young Annabel lives in the 1950s and dreams of a future with jetpacks, flying cars and robots. However, little does she know that she is living under an evil spell that could mean she has no future at all...
