Two young creatures meet and play in the snowy wilds of the Arctic in this story of friendship, adventure and love. Miki, a little polar bear, is scampering through the snow while Mum goes fishing, when he sees a red dot in the distance. The dot turns out to be a little girl in a bright red coat. They play together and when his new friend loses her mitten, Miki dives into the water and saves it. He also helps the girl find her mummy, before he dashes back to find his own mother.
It’s a simple story, but full of energy and vigour, and with moments of drama and poignancy. Fiona Woodcock’s illustrations create swirling snowstorms and moments of tenderness between parent and child with equal skill.

But Miki has never seen a human before and the little girl has never seen a polar bear. They discover more about each other as they play in the snow but then the perils of the polar landscape impel Miki to take the little girl home before undertaking the long journey to find his own mother.

Although one is a polar bear and one is a little girl, Miki and Dot share a common experience: they are both separated from their mothers when they meet. Their bond of friendship gives them the strength to support each other during the course of a day that will last with them both forever. This is a moving and poignant story set in a changing and challenging polar landscape, perfect for the Christmas season. It wraps up important themes about empathy, kindness, and courage.
The story is both simply told and affecting. The gorgeous snowscapes, full of real atmosphere, are created with printmaking techniques by debut illustrator Fiona Woodcock.
Raised in the Midlands with love, laughter, and library books, Corrinne studied English Literature at St Andrews University. She has spent much of her adult life working in children’s TV as a producer/director. She created the triple BAFTA-winning Share a Story competition and co-devised and wrote for Milkshake’s Pip Ahoy. She lives in Manchester with her husband, daughter, and cat. Corrinne is the author of several picture books, including A Song in the Mist and A Dot in the Snow .
Corrinne grew up in Worcestershire and Warwickshire, it was here that seven year old Corrinne scribbled, folded and stapled together her first picture book about Hannah, a lonely hamster who escapes her cage in search of a soulmate.
Aside from a short stint as a theatre reviewer for The Scotsman, Corrinne has spent the last fourteen years being a professional silly person in children's television. Making things up for Ragdoll, CiTV, CBeebies, Cosgrove Hall and latterly for her own company, Stitchy Feet. World Book Day inspired a children's competition she started at CiTV called Share a Story which has been awarded three children's BAFTAs. Her TV credits also include co-devising and writing children’s series Pip Ahoy for Milkshake. She's always found picture books compelling. She like stories where children wrestle with their thoughts and feelings; where small moments are a big deal; where tone manages to be both thoughtful and humorous. She likes philosophical themes of identity and belonging. She's aspiring to capture some of this in the stories she writes. She lives in Manchester with her husband, daughter and cat. When they had a spare bedroom, she turned it into an office to write but spent most of her time at the dining table or in coffee shops. Now the office has been rightfully claimed by her daughter as a nursery and she writes in bed while she sleeps. What happened to Hannah the hamster? She was duped into befriending a crocodile husband and wife who planned to eat her. Cheery stuff!
