This excellent book is an inspiring and all-encompassing guide to the world of music for young people. By inviting them to imagine they are attending a music course over an academic year the authors make it particularly involving for young people and the different ‘lessons’ cover everything from the different kinds of music and musical instruments there are, to the elements of musical language, and how to make music yourself.
The tone is engaging and conversational throughout and the book is extremely well-designed, colourful illustrations by Daniel Frost adding to the overall appeal. Readers can listen online to recordings my top musicians too thanks to a QR code. Bravo! ~ Andrea Reece

Meet The Boss! He's called Sergio Trunk. Some people call him The Maestro, and he, along with his team of talented musicians, will lead you through 40 lessons that help you to learn about classical music, the theory behind music, and the fun you can have making it.
Written by experts and vividly illustrated throughout, the School of Music's six professors include the percussionist Roxy Mojo, star singer Diva Venus and composer-guitarist Ronny 'Beethoven' O'Reilly. The School of Music introduces children to many different genres of music, from across the centuries and from around the world: from Gregorian to Gamelan, and from Tango to Techno.
Meurig Bowen studied music at King's College, Cambridge, where he was a choral scholar. His wide ranging professional experience has included spells in management for performers such as The Hilliard Ensemble and the Australian Chamber Orchestra as well as major roles at festivals including Lichfield and Aldeburgh. Since 2007 Meurig has been the Director of Cheltenham Music Festival. Throughout his career Meurig has written extensively about music and musicians for publications and other media such as The Guardian and BBC Radio 3. After a decade-long stint working for Nimbus Records in South Wales, Rachel Bowen is now established as an admired director of youth and community choirs in Gloucestershire. Alongside class and singing teaching at Dean Close School in Cheltenham, she conducts eight choirs on a regular basis, including three separate groupings at Cheltenham Youth Choirs and an adult choir Mid-Life Choir-Sis. They have performed a wide range of repertoire in venues such as Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucester Cathedral and, to a crowd of 25,000 at an Olympic Torch Ceremony event in 2012, Cheltenham Racecourse.
