This large format information book is the second of a series published by What on Earth Books which this time explores the variety of ways animals use their sense of smell. Divided into chapters each of which explores a different use of smell including bonding with parents, finding food, attracting a mate and avoiding danger. With full-colour illustrations throughout, on some pages also there are flaps which reveal more detailed information. Although the pages are not overloaded with facts, the author has not dumbed down the information and uses enough scientific terminology to satisfy older readers, often referring to current scientific research. While sharing fascinating facts about the animal kingdom and answering such questions as why female mosquitoes are so attracted to our skin, this engaging book is also likely to stimulate many readers' natural curiosity to find out more. - The School Librarian (SLA)
Emmanuelle Figueras was born in French Guiana. While studying law in Paris, she discovered a passion for writing, popular science and the animal world. She went on to study gorillas in Rwanda, took a course in primatology and became a journalist and author. She writes about animals and science for numerous French magazines and is the author of over 50 books for both adults and children. She lives near Montpelier in France. Claire de Gastold was born in Paris in 1978. Her work has been published in magazines and she has illustrated several children's books. She lives near Paris in France.
