As with many of the Bloomsbury Graded Readers , this is well paced, beautifully laid out, with fun and expressive illustrations by Erica Salcedo. It is an uplifting story with deeper themes below the surface such as those of loss and honesty.
The Great Cake Race is about a little girl called Jamila, who enters a competition to bake an original and delicious cake and race around the park with it remaining in one piece.
Jamila is a happy and resourceful girl with a supportive family and many friends. There is the inevitable baddy, the building excitement of the competition and the difficulties of creating the perfect cake. The hero of the story however is Jamila’s grandmother who recently passed away.
Coming to terms with her loss and how she becomes involved in the story is very sensitively told. It is a very readable story, partly as many children will be familiar with the TV Bake Off series and/or the loss of a relative.
The text and vocabulary are just on the right side of challenging and any complicated words are explained to Jamila, which is a clever touch. Words such as pirouetted and decoratively for example. As with the other books in this series, there is a quiz, thought provoking questions and related ideas and projects to explore.

Teresa Heapy is an award-winning children's writer.
