Book Band: Grey ideal for ages 8+
Another in the super series of graded readers by Bloomsbury Readers. I love that this series of books incorporates so many different authors and illustrators, in addition to the huge range of genres.
This book is about two child detectives who solve three different mysteries. The first story is about a rich lady who dies and leaves two wills. Which was the final and valid one? Sindhu and Jeet cleverly solve this one with the help of realising that handwritten notes are written on both sides of a piece of paper leaving an imprint, with the date behind! (very environmentally friendly using up scrap paper!)
The second is about a missing movie star, who has not been kidnapped or murdered, but was simply in disguise for some privacy. The theme of the importance of mental health and well being is cleverly covered in this story.
The third story is set at an Indian Wedding. The wedding might be traditional, but the child detectives use modern technology to solve the mystery of the missing ring.
All three stories are fun and well-paced. As with many of the stories there are some tricky words to stretch the more able – such as cacophony and maruthani (traditional henna patterns, as I was to learn.) Having three books in one offer attainable reading targets for children and a sense of achievement.
The only negative thing I would mention is that the font used for the handwritten sections is quite small and a little harder to read. As ever, I love the addition of the quizzes, questions and creative writing ideas.
