Glowing with love, compassion and respect, Girlhood Unfiltered presents rich, authentic writings by twenty Black teenage girls who are involved with its editor’s empowering Milk Honey Bees organisation.
Created as “a safe haven for girls to share who they are, where they’re at and think about who they might want to be”, Ebinehita Iyere’s life experiences led her to found Milk Honey Bees, and her engaging introduction shares stories from across her life, including how, at the age of ten, she found herself grouped together with other classmates for being “Black, big and typically disruptive and therefore not ‘worthy’ of any further attention.”
The collection itself is divided into three sections that form the word HER - Healing, Empowerment and Resilience, components that underpin the Milk Honey Bees ethos. With contributors ranging from fifteen to twenty-three, the writings are beautifully personal, honest and unfiltered. For example, 16-year-old Jaala shares a moving diarised account of her day, and her bigger journey through school.
Meanwhile, Taliah’s piece ends with a stirring call for teachers, parents and society “to treat girls with respect. We are more than our behaviour.”
Rounding off with rousing, empowering words of wisdom and support from Iyere, Girlhood Unfiltered radiates life-changing magic.

The voices of young Black girls are too often left out of conversations on the Black girl experience; in this collection, the founder of South London-based organisation Milk Honey Bees seeks to bring their voices to the front. Girlhood Unfiltered will reach those readers who relate, those who want to learn and those who care deeply about their community.
Milk Honey Bees is a creative and expressive safe space for Black girls to flourish and put H.E.R (Healing, Empowerment and Resilience) first. Milk Honey Bees is rooted in the creativity, celebration and liberation of Black Girlhood by amplifying the voice and visibility of Black Girls in all facets of life, opening doors that can often be closed to Black girls and ensuring that they are able to put both their Blackness and girlhood at the forefront, enabling them to discover not only their full potential, but also who they are. It’s more than just an organisation, it’s a sisterhood, a family.

Ebinehita Iyere founded Milk Honey Bees in 2017 as a creative and expressive safe space for young Black women and girls in South London. She is a passionate public speaker, mentor and advocate for young people across London, and is currently completing her PhD on the complexities and flaws in the education system as per the experiences of Black teenagers. Millk Honey Bees have partnered with Sony, Barbie, The Black Girl Global Justice Initiative and more.
