School librarians work across the school with all and everyone � interacting in a professional manner with busy and sometimes stressed staff and students, both in and out of lessons. An effective social manner, good behaviour techniques and a calm, caring and listening attitude all go a long way to solving problems, answering enquiries, finding that special book or resource that the user needs at that time, or perhaps by providing a haven of peace and calm for study or contemplation.
Here Karen Bainbridge, an experienced school librarian, explains how she helps her students on the autism spectrum (ASD). Communication and social interaction are both challenges for these sometimes confused and anxious students and the author explains her understanding, techniques, patience and usually her success at dealing with these users. This publication will demonstrate the guidance and patience needed to bring the best out of this vulnerable but valuable group of users that can help to turn the library into a haven for them and give them a lifelong interest in libraries.
Karen Bainbridge is the librarian at a large urban Essex secondary school. Before becoming a school librarian she worked in a variety of childcare based roles.
