Bill the bear is a playwright, and a jolly good one. His play, staged at The Glade, has a fairy queen, a fairy king, a cheeky little sprite called Puck, and a character called Bottom. The audience love it, even the queen bee.
It’s all so exciting that that night, poor Bill can’t sleep, and he’s keeping all his friends awake too. When the queen complains, it’s clear that he really needs to zzzzzzzsleep. His friends make more helpful suggestions, and by the end of Act three, Bill has drifted off.
Bill Bear will remind grown-ups of a certain other playwright, and end notes explain all the similarities to young readers too. Louie Stowell’s funny story and Isobel Lundie’s gorgeous illustrations, drenched in the colours of a midsummer night and full of fascinating little details, will enchant young children. Louie Stowell was born in London and has lived there ever since, except for a short stint in Watford to study advertising. She’s worked as a copywriter, cartoonist, PR and in-house fiction writer, and was Publisher at Ladybird/Penguin Random House before writing full-time.
Her 2019 debut, T he Dragon in the Library , was followed by The Monster in the Lake in 2020 and The Wizard in the Wood in 2021. Otherland , a standalone middle-grade novel, followed in 2021. She lives in London with her wife Karen, her dog Buffy, and a creepy puppet that is probably cursed.
