Sister Spirit is a skilfully written, genre defying novel. Rich with Nigerian mythology this supernatural thriller is also a story of boarding school drama, friendship, romance, ancestry, history, coming-of- age and self-discovery. Through a feat of incredible, tightly controlled storytelling the narrative never feels crowded though, instead as readers we are treated to an engrossing read that keeps us on our toes.
Tara is an excellent main character, headstrong, brave and full of curiosity. Whilst bully Lola develops in such an interesting way, becoming much more than the mean girl she is initially depicted as. This novel is an excellent introduction of Nigerian history, culture, and mythology, as well as a gripping read. Every reader will take something different away from this book, such is Traore’s expert blending of stories. As soon as I finished it, I wanted to start it again.
