Frankly, I can’t recommend Daisy May Johnson’s How to be series more heartily. Whimsical, clever and thrilling, steeped in period flavour and cake-related joy, these mystery-laden books are a refreshing, many-layered tonic for the mind and heart.
In the case of How to be Free , it’s a glorious story of friendship between pupils at the School of the Good Sisters — a wonderful place in which you learn “how to make the sort of friends that stayed with you for the rest of your life” — with the mystery of their missing beloved Headmistress, Good Sister June, at its big heart.
With little more than an ambiguous note to work with, to begin with at least, Hanna, Edie and Calla embark on a clue-strewn mission to find Good Sister June.
Being telescopic in structure — perspectives are focussed on from different angles and points in time – How to be Free , and the rest of the series, is consummately page-turning, with footnotes peppered with tantalising teasers, adding layers of (often amusing) detail.
