All types of horses and ponies star in Pippa Funnell’s excellent series but little Rusty is very special indeed. Tilly and Mia find him all on his own in an empty paddock while they’re out on a hack and when it emerges that his owner can no longer look after him, the pony moves temporarily into Silver Shoe stables.
He’s quiet and gentle and Tilly notices that a special bond develops between Rusty and Edward, a young autistic boy who comes to help at the stables, though refuses to ride. As the friendship between boy and pony develops, Tilly realises just how good Rusty is for Edward. When the time comes for Rusty to leave, a place is found at the local Riding for the Disabled centre. Edward can continue his riding lessons and learn much more too.
The story is a dramatic one, especially when Edward tries to take Rusty out on his own, and it’s full too of the wonderful horse-y details and insight into their care that make these books so satisfying for young pony lovers.
