This is a hilarious and perfectly pitched story for fans of Wimpy Kid , Little Badman and Sam Wu is Not Afraid style books. With plenty of jokes and just the right level of peril, young readers will be laughing and gasping along with Mina and her friends. Energetic black & white illustrations, clever use of darker pages and inventive typography bring the story to life, adding extra humour on each page.
It was great to see British Bangladeshi and Muslim characters and traditions front and centre in a funny, adventure story – I’m sure that many readers will enjoy seeing themselves and their friends represented. Perhaps most impressive is the skill with which Islam perfectly captures the voices, concerns and quirks of primary school children. From their hilarious imaginations and one-liners, to the seriousness with which they undertake certain tasks, each character is expertly developed and utterly recognisable.
A fantastic, fun read, I’m already hoping this is the first in a long series.
