Amelia Cheeseheart is an intrepid adventurer and investigator who lives inside a hot air balloon, which hangs in the museum gift-shop, with her banana loving best friend, Webster the Spider. In Mummy Mayhem, the friends take to the skies in Amelia’s plane to solve the mystery of why special objects from the museum’s Ancient Egyptian room keep disappearing.
Graphic novels and comics are growing in popularity with child readers and should be taken seriously. The combination of words and images requires a coming together of sophisticated reading and visual literacy skills, enabling a young reader to draw together the full meaning of the text. Amelia Cheeseheart Investigates is a good example of the form for the youngest readers.
Its well-paced adventure, endearing characters and accessible format will appeal to five to seven year-olds, who are becoming more fluent and independent. I gave this to two children in my class who were sitting together on the train on the way to a school trip and they absolutely devoured it. The font is very accessible for a young audience and the action is easy to follow, whilst the chapter format is great for building reading stamina.
Building on from this, children will love other titles like Jamie Smart’s Max and Chaffy series or Mark Bradley’s Bumble and Snug series.

Cat Weldon is a children’s author who writes funny, fast-paced stories full of adventure, heart, and a sprinkling of chaos. She has a lifelong fascination with museums – the hidden corners, the curious artefacts, and the stories that lurk inside every display case – and can often be found jotting down ideas beside a fossil or two.
Cat holds a master’s degree in scriptwriting and has a background in children’s theatre. These days, she splits her time between writing, teaching, and chasing her wayward chickens through neighbouring gardens, while occasionally pausing for a banana. She lives in East Anglia with her family and a growing collection of museum postcards.
