How do you cross the river to reach the ice cream van on the other side? Frog Can Float is part of Tony Neal's fun picture book series that gently introduces young readers to simple mathematical and scientific principles. Previous concepts included force , capacity and weather . This time we look at floating and sinking, demonstrated by a group of animal friends trying different ways to float across the water to reach the other side.
Firstly they look for different things that float - and find quite a few that rapidly sink. The wood floats so they sensibly decide to build a raft...though with an elephant on board it might not be a smooth crossing!
The story is fun and the animal characters are brilliantly expressive. Young scientists will love the question and answer elements - will the stone sink? what about the plank of wood? which of the friends is heavier, a mouse or a monkey?
There's plenty to return to in this book, with useful tips at the start to help guide the reading, and some excellent ideas of activities to try at home.
Frog and friends are desperate for ice cream, but the truck is across the river and they need to find a way across. Children will laugh out loud at Frog's funny mishaps in this introduction to the science of floating and sinking.
