We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is, deservedly, recognised as a picture book classic. Now its creators Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury present us with a new book that is certain to be become a much-loved favourite with families everywhere too.
The story in Oh Dear, Look What I Got! is, of course, simple with lots of opportunities for young listeners to join in but builds up beautifully as the pages turn. The hunt in this adventure is for shopping; a child heads out to buy various items but in each case is supplied instead with an animal – a parrot instead of a carrot, a cat instead of a hat, and finally, a bear instead of a chair.
There are lots of chances for children to guess what’s on the next page, via rhyme and those wonderfully wrapped parcels. It culminates in a fantastic party with all the participants, human and animal, dancing together (and all the correct items delivered).
Helen Oxenbury’s illustrations perfectly represent mood and feeling, slipping in details that will make every reading a joy. Expect the child’s repeated outcry as the parcels are opened, ‘Oh dear, look what I got! Do I want that? No I do NOT!’ to become a favourite saying with toddlers across the nation!

Oh Dear, Look What I Got! is a happy picture book to love and to feed the imagination of a whole new generation of children – and a perfect slice of nostalgia for everyone who grew up with We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.
“I was drawn to the text because it’s so original. It had a flavour of Dr Seuss, and I relished the prospect to work in a different way to enhance the funny text.” – Helen Oxenbury
“When I heard that Helen wanted to do the artwork for it, I was over the moon. She has a wonderful expressive line that conveys mood and feeling, very much grounded in a place. She does all that, while carefully popping in detail, cameos that we might miss on a first reading or even on a second reading.” – Michael Rosen
Michael Rosen is a hugely bestselling author of picture books and poetry. Michael frequently appears on radio and gives talks and lectures on children’s literature. Michael was the Children’s Laureate for 2007–2009 and the winner of the Eleanor Farjeon Award. He lives in London.
Michael Rosen on Michael Rosen: I grew up in the London suburb of Pinner, a place my parents often wondered about. How had we landed there? My parents were teachers, politically committed (socialists), and great storytellers and readers. I was lucky to have found them. Most of my adult life, I've been a freelance writer, teacher (of sorts), journalist, performer and broadcaster. I visit schools doing my one-man show, and support Arsenal Football Club. I have often written about my life and family, but I also write occasional fantasy (usually based in a real place) and non-fiction.
Things you didn't know about Michael Rosen I wear size 12 shoes. I like speaking French. I'm an atheist. I love mobile phones. I love houmous. I can't live without green warty pickled gherkins. I hate racism. My father was American. I can slide my top lip one way and my bottom lip the other. I can play the harmonica.
