Siblings Kya and Neo want to have fun, not sit and listen to their Grandmother’s lecture about the Thirukkural. Finding they’ve travelled back in time to a Tamil village they meet Thiruvallavar and through a series of quests and riddles uncover the first piece of wisdom of the Thirukkural.
The First Letter & The Forgotten Path is a great way of using adventure to introduce young readers to Tamil heritage, to the work of Thiruvallavar and to the Thirukkural. The book is fast paced and a quick read, which I think is a great format for engaging children. You have time to explore and learn about the first great truth of the Thirukkural while the book is still brief enough to not feel like a lesson.
There's a great opportunity for readers to complete activities that encourage reflection on what they’ve read, or go and learn more by themselves and also build on their understanding as they get older. With more of the Kural explored in later instalments I think that this series is a great introduction to Tamil heritage.
