Presented in the form of a journal and beautifully illustrated this extraordinary book mixes adventure, mystery and discovery as we follow the enigmatic narrator on an expedition to the coral seas to find out more about them and the people who live in them. He’s immediately plunged into danger, thrown off the ferry he’s travelling on into the ocean after witnessing something he shouldn’t have seen.
Washed up by enormous luck on a coral island, he has to survive alone until he meets three children, Aba, Aleefa and Sarna. Born and brought up on the islands, they’re the best guides he could have, teaching him how to dive down to explore the coral and showing him the wonders of the world beneath the surface.
All that he sees is represented in his colour illustrations and vibrant black and white sketches, as though we are indeed looking at the pages of his journal, and it’s a wonderful way to learn about this beautiful part of the world and especially its marine life; we feel we are right there with our anonymous narrator.
We discover the threats this part of the world faces too as the ruthless sea captain returns, and there’s real excitement as the children and their new friend protect their home. A gorgeous mix of story and information, this is a must for every would-be explorer.
