French author and artist designer Didier Cornille invites children to accompany him on a tour of the world’s greatest cities and with its clear and simple text and beautifully constructed graphic illustrations, this is a very attractive invitation. He first describes how cities have developed and the problems that they face, and then subsequent chapters offer current examples of how pioneering cities around the world have tackled such issues as overcrowding, pollution, heavy traffic, and poverty and tells us the story of the passionate people who came up with the ideas. There are fascinating examples of really innovative urban planning from around the world – although there is inevitably a preponderance of examples from France.
The short and engaging blocks of narrative and the detailed, clear illustrations make the book very accessible and a tempting book to browse through. Questions are posed throughout the book, as well, inviting readers to consider the potential they see in a future city of their own design and to think about how cities can become eco- friendlier and more sustainable. While clearly articulating the problems city dwellers face, the fascinating solutions that are presented so informatively they leave the reader feeling positive about the future, which is particularly important for younger readers.

Didier Cornille was a student of Claude Courtecuisse at the Lille Fine Arts School. He then joined Roger Tallon's design department at the Arts Décoratifs in Paris. During his studies he met the designer Ettore Sottsass in Milan, who steered his work as a designer in the right direction. his work as a designer, and turned to the creation which he exhibited at the Neotu gallery.
After teaching design at the fine arts in Tunis, then in Tourcoing and at LISAA (Institut Supérieur des Arts Appliqués) in Paris, he taught design for a long time at Le Mans Fine arts School. Today, he devotes his time to his books and his work as a designer. He lives in Paris.
