The scary story is arrestingly atmospheric from the off, when George and Lacey arrive at eccentric Uncle Zeedie’s “sprawling modern mansion” in the Welsh valleys, observing “violent mobs of gnawed branches clawing out between dark suffocating leaves”. Soon after, the first person they encounter refers to Uncle Zeedie’s pile as “Death Mansion”, which seems dreadfully appropriate when they notice that stuff inside the building has a habit of rotting — milk sours, and bread quickly crusts with mould.
Into this, George, with his sixth sense, has the distinct feeling that “death was all around them, and both he and Lacey were in terrible danger” before he starts to see visions of children. At the same time, it seems that the villagers hold Zeedie to blame for all the kids that have vanished around these parts.
Twisty and twisted, edgy and unexpected, Uncle Zeedie is sure to stop those to dare to read it in their tracks, unable to put the book down, or turn off the lights.
