Politics is all around us as this pocket guide for young people points out and it’s crucial they understand that if, young or old, they want to be engaged citizens and have their voices heard.
It does an excellent job of explaining what we mean by politics, describing clearly and accessibly the different types of government and the different political systems, from empires to democracy.
There are sections on elections and the history of one person, one vote, a breakdown of left- and right-wing values, even a description of proportional representation versus first past the post.
The final chapters look at change and activism, with a spotlight on child activists, followed by a section encouraging readers to get involved in the causes they care about, and it concludes with a whole set of suggestions of what you can do to make a difference. As with The Week Junior, the information is presented via lively text on pages full of colour photographs, and it’s up to date and perfectly pitched for its young audience.

Who put politicians in charge? How do we organise our societies to be fair? How should we pay for schools and hospitals? And what do governments actually do anyway?! This essential guide covers everything from activism and human rights to elections and democracy, all explained in a way that's easy to understand.
' Guide to Politics explains many political concepts and terms and makes them accessible to young audiences who wish to understand the world and the politics of the adults better (pun intended). The information is laid out in an engaging way that allows for focusing and consideration. Will purchase for our library and recommend to teacher friends.' - NetGalley reviewer
'A really useful book that goes through more than just the basics of politics. Its focus is often on the UK and our style of politics, but there is also a lot in there about different countries around the world. The history of different political systems is looked at, and there are some great 'You can do it!' features as well, which encourage the reader to get involved with political activism. The tone isn't hectoring or judgey of political institutions, but it does a good job of looking at the pros and cons of different ways of politics and governance. The style and presentation is bright and colourful. The information is presented in smallish chunks but doesn't talk down to the reader. I'd recommend it for curious children (and perhaps to those of us adults who sometimes don't want to admit that we don't understand as much about politics as we pretend to!).' - NetGalley reviewer
