This book is a bit of a classic in multilingual circles. Bilingual in English and French, with interspersed words in Lingala, and additional audio in Arabic, Kinyarwanda, Suaheli and Portuguese, Kende! Kende! Kende! (“Go!” in Lingala) tells the story of Lolie and her journey as a refugee from an unnamed African country (although the author in the afterword explains that it is the Democratic Republic of the Congo in her mind).
After several years in a refugee camp, Lolie and her family arrive in a new country that they make their home. Stuck in the snow with a new baby sibling on the way, Lolie’s newly found language skills alert bypassers who help get the family safely to the hospital. The books treats its very serious themes unflinchingly and without drama - the focus very much on the people, making it a useful book to gently introduce young children to journeys some of their peers may have undertaken.
A multilingual story of love and learning, joy and journey Inspired by the families throughout Central Africa who are forced to leave their homes, this is an honest but hopeful own-voice narrative about displacement, migration, and finding a new home. Having fled their village as conflict approaches, Mamá, Papá, Lolie, and Nico live in a refugee camp until they are chosen for resettlement in North America.
