In dyslexia friendly format, these 8 short stories show how Bella’s friends help her be more confident, find friends and much more. Bella, Bertie and Bill is the first of 2 short story collections that focus on a little girl Bella and her friends Bertie the dachshund and Bill the crow. In these stories Bertie, Bill and a cast of animal characters help Bella to overcome her problems.
I liked how each story focused on a separate issue, it made each of them concise, clear and easy to follow. The first story “Bella wants to know what is Agronomy?” shows Bella’s curiosity and desire to learn new words to put into her blue book. I liked how it puts Bella as a role model for having the desire to learn new words and ask questions when you don’t know the answer.
Each story covers relatable topics like building confidence, controlling anger and even some help for when Bella is being teased, making the essence of the stories relatable and helpful as well as entertaining for younger (and older) readers. The simple narratives offer solutions with positive outcomes that will satisfy readers.
The illustrations featured throughout are in quite calming colours and complements the colour of the pages. The illustrations helped to bring the story to life and I found the fox with potatoes in his ears amusing. Even the depiction of the spider is friendly in appearance. This is a sweet collection of stories with positive and helpful messaging. Easy to dip in and out of, or read from start to finish.

This book is a collection of eight gentle, uplifting short stories that follow Bella as she learns to navigate everyday challenges such as making friends, managing worries, and overcoming procrastination. With the help of her loyal dachshund, Bertie, and the clever, kind-hearted crow, Bill, Bella discovers practical ways to build confidence and resilience.
Written in a dyslexia-friendly format, the stories are designed to be accessible, reassuring, and encouraging for young readers who may recognise their own struggles in Bella’s experiences. This is the first book in a two-book series and has already been lovingly shared as printed gifts for the author’s three granddaughters, as well as distributed at a local Dyslexia Fair in support of charitable donations.
Jane V Cook is the author of “Bella, Bertie and Bill”. It is the first book in the BBB series of illustrated chapter books for children, 5- 9 years. Jane was raised in rural Wales and currently lives in London. She has worked with children in a hospital setting for her whole career. She has 3 children and 3 grandchildren. She knows the importance of building confidence, acquiring resilience, being positive and learning how to enjoy life.
Her books were initially written for her grandchildren and then to support a local Dyslexia society. Her aim is to help young children with the simple but sometimes difficult aspects of their lives.
Doug Gordon, the illustrator, artfully brings the characters to life and has a delightful sense of humour that he brings to his work.
The BBB series of books have a nostalgic and classical feel. The style of the books has been chosen to try and make reading easier for those with visual stress and to be dyslexia friendly. Jane nor Doug have used any generative AI in the production of the BBB series.
If readers have the time, Jane and Doug would be very grateful for any honest feedback on their books.
