Mapping is such an interesting tool for all of us to use. Important not just from a geographical point of view, but also in a psychological sense as an aid to thinking, planning and understanding. It also something that the curriculum tackles in Key Stage 1, so this is an invaluable book in so many ways.
A little girl has moved to a new home far away from loved ones and familiarity. Her Mum draws her a map to help her work out where things are in her new community and to help her find her way around and to restore her sense of security. Instinctively she wants to map where she is relative to her previous existence, and so the map must get bigger, until it takes up the whole wall.
Her new friends want to join in and in doing so, they are sharing information about themselves and about the new places they discover together. Her father expands the map further to show her how things used to be and together they begin to map out how things may look in the future, if they look after the world.
This is a lovely gentle story about resilience too; our heroine has to cope with her favourite tree being cut down and with the loss of her beloved Joe Dog. Ultimately, she learns that while change is inevitable, it isn’t always bad and brings with it opportunities.
At the back of the book there are some really lovely suggestions for children to make their own maps, which will be useful at home and in the class. Children will no doubt be encouraged in their creativity by the lovely artwork which complements the sensitive and thoughtful text.
A gentle story about moving, making connections and mapping a better world.

When a young girl moves to a new country, her mum helps her draw a map to understand her unfamiliar surroundings. They draw the new neighbourhood, new friends and the special places the girl has found but important things from the past are missing like Grandma and Joe-Dog. So the girl makes the map bigger to include them.
Soon the girl's friends are inspired to add their own stories and the distances between them all seem to shrink. Yet when misfortune strikes and the girl's world is shown to be less fixed than she thought, how will she learn to navigate change?
Discover how we all have the power to create a better future.
A powerful picture book about the experience of moving to a different country that celebrates the diversity and differences of our experiences while empowering children to remember the power they have to change the world.
Providing hope and comfort in an unfamiliar world, this is the perfect book to help children process their emotions when navigating change.
'This highly imaginative, touching and useful picture book is ideal to read and discuss with EYFS classes. Highly recommended.' - The School Reading List
