As one might expect from a twice winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal, this is a beautiful book, illustrated with the most gorgeous watercolours that celebrate both the natural environment and evocative human connections.
This is the story of Jack’s summer spent away from his city home, transported to the countryside to stay with his beloved grandfather. He likes nothing better than exploring the local woods and river, listening to stories of his grandfather’s youth and learning more about the wildlife they can see around them- especially if they remain quietly in the den they build together.
This is a perfect example of the benefits of a screen free life for children. When it rains, they make bird boxes and Grandad keeps Jack enthralled with stories of his life as a sailor. But the peace of the countryside is shattered by a very topical event – fly tipping! The river and pond are dangerously polluted and the wildlife at risk.
They both set to immediately to clear it up and are joined by neighbours in the morning, which gives a fabulous message about communities working together.
This is a delightfully absorbing story with lots to spot and talk about. It doesn’t hector or lecture but gives a gentle positive message about looking after the environment and, of course, is a lovely, warm representation of a strong cross generational bond.

But one night, that peace is shattered with a screech of tyres as a monstrous heap of rubbish is emptied into the village pond.

Michael Foreman was born in Suffolk in 1938, and studied at Lowestoft School of Art, St Martin’s, London, and the Royal College of Art, where he won a scholarship to the USA in 1963. He has worked as an Art Director at Playboy and King magazines and still works as Art Editor of the literary journal Ambit.
He has also made animated films in Scandinavia and for the BBC. His first book, The General , (a picture book published in 1961), dealt with disarmament and received rave reviews. Since then he has illustrated more than thirty of his own books and over a hundred by authors as varied as Shakespeare, J.M. Barrie, the Brothers Grimm and former Python, Terry Jones. He has established a reputation as one of the world’s leading illustrators and has won numerous prizes including the Smarties Prize, the Kate Greenaway Medal (twice), the Francis Williams Prize (twice) and the Aigle d’Argent at the Festival International du Livre in France. Michael is married and has three sons.
He spends most of his time in London, but regularly visits St Ives, Cornwall, where he owns the painter Ben Nicholson’s old house.
