The experiences of three young kittens as they start Cat School make for both a funny and engaging graphic novel and a gentle lesson in what life’s like for those who are neurodivergent.
Friends, impulsive Tangle and the more contemplative Eno, are both excited and apprehensive about starting big school, though for readers it seems like cat heaven with lessons in sleeping, a range of cosy spots to sit, including cardboard boxes, and delicious seafood casserole on the canteen menu.
They settle in quickly, but new friend Pelly finds it harder. Pelly never went to kitten school, doesn’t like change and finds the busyness of school life unsettling. Keen to help, Tangle plans a surprise treat for Pelly, against Eno’s advice. It doesn’t go well but does lead to the three young cats coming to understand one another much better.
The cat lifestyle setting is delightful, and the illustrations are thoroughly charming. The story will entertain all readers, while offering particular comfort to those who, like Rose Robbins, are neurodiverse. Rose Robbins has written picturebooks with characters who are neurodiverse, including Loud! and Me and My Sister , but readers who enjoy Cat School could also look out for Zoe Antoniades’ Cally and Jimmy stories.

It’s the first ever day of school! Tangle and Eno are a little anxious, but soon acclimatise. Pelly arrives late, and seems strange to all the other kittens. She feels alienated and stays home, but is sought out and brought back into the main mix by the efforts of Tangle and Eno. Now they are firm friends!

Rose Robbins is a Children’s Book author and illustrator based in London, who focuses on topics around disability, relationships and communication. She is known for featuring and celebrating differences in her work, taking inspiration from her own life experiences as both a young carer and a late-diagnosed autistic person.
Rose is a qualified teacher with specialism in Art and SEND, and is also an alumni of the Cambridge School of Art MA in Children’s Books. Rose runs inclusive creative workshops in schools and libraries for children and young people, these have included (but are by no means limited to!) puppet-making, sensory stories, animation, comic and narrative storytelling. She is especially keen to collaborate with SEND provisions in local libraries and schools to produce bespoke activities that suit all abilities.
Rose is a passionate advocate for the rights of disabled people, a long time collaborator with Inclusive Minds as an Authenticity Advocate, speaking at the London Book Fair and writing for SEN magazine. Rose has also worked with the Charity Sibs UK, who support siblings of people with learning disabilities.
