Scoop, wiggle, wiggle, Mole is digging a shelter, a great grand hole. Around him, other animals are building too – Bird, Beaver and Bee – and each claims that their house is superior to Mole’s. Undeterred, unbothered even, Mole keeps working away, cutaway cross-sections showing us just how great and grand his shelter really is.
When a storm breaks, Mole immediately invites his neighbours to join him. Initially they refuse the invite, and not that politely to be honest, but as the wind picks up and the rain pours down, they change their minds and find a warm welcome in Mole’s cosy and spacious home.
Mole’s unswerving focus on his digging and the other animals’ boasting provide plentiful opportunities for humour while the happy ending shows us all the importance of kindness, generosity and of not judging on appearances.
Kasia Fryza’s illustrations are full of energy and Will Hamilton-Davies’ rhyming text will have youngsters quickly joining in and this quirky picture book is full of fun.
A brilliantly funny story about empathy, kindness and the importance of not judging a book by its cover... or, in this case, a mole by his mound!

Mole is on a mission to build an extraordinary shelter for him and his friends. But Bird, Beaver and Bee don't see what the fuss is about - who would want to spend time in a muddy, mouldy mound when they could be enjoying Bird's impressive nest, Beaver's incredible lodge or Bee's intricate hive? One by one, they rush to build their own, far superior, homes, failing to notice a storm that is on its way.
When it finally arrives, Bird, Beaver and Bee's houses are destroyed, and they are forced to seek shelter inside Mole's mound! It becomes clear that this seemingly ordinary mound is much more extraordinary on the inside.
Scoop, wiggle-wiggle, went the mole. Working on his great, grand hole.

Will Hamilton-Davies , a Bristol-based author and poet, is an exciting new voice on the children’s picture book scene. As one of six children, Will spent most of his young adult life entertaining three much younger siblings - much of which involved reading stories. Inspired by the magic of picture books and encouraged by a retired primary school teacher, he crowdfunded and self-published his first picture book at just 22 years old, The Shrew with the Flu , which has now sold over 5,000 copies in the UK.
Will’s writing is filled with warmth, wisdom and a playful sense of adventure. His stories champion confidence, curiosity, and courage - empowering young readers to speak up, stand out, and embrace the world around them.
