Tamsin Mori’s Untamed Darkness sees Callen and co immediately thrust into their third Gargoyles adventure. With Callen having stepped up as Sole Guardian of Gargoyle’s Rest, and having had their necks saved by Morgana, what can they do but answer her call to investigate reports that ghasts are afoot in the village?
That said, Callen is initially “keen to avoid taking on any problems that weren’t his”, and Agnus is seriously off with Callen, which plants seeds of tension that mount through the novel, alongside the mounting plague of ghasts that’s targeting the village’s most vulnerable residents.
When Morgana explains that the ghasts are coming from the quarry Source and “multiplying faster than the village gargoyles can catch them”, it becomes clear that something more sinister is afoot: “Ghasts didn’t multiply on their own. They were made – conjured out of spite and fury. Which meant somebody had to be making them”.
Driven by lively dialogue and a rising sense of danger, Untamed Darkness is underpinned by themes of trust, friendship, responsibility, and learning that it’s OK to ask for help when you need it. As such, it comes recommended for confident readers who love peril-packed fantastical fiction that also packs an emotional punch.

But when he decides to release the magic from Gargoyle's Rest in the hope that it will dilute the darkened magic, it actually feeds and strengthens a lakeful of half-formed grotesques.
