A big move for 11-year-old Lucy sparks change and a new found love of the sea and protecting marine life.
Lucy enjoys her life in London but when her mum loses her job and sees it as an opportunity to transform their lives by moving them to the Caribbean, Lucy is skeptical. But she soon makes friends and faces her fear by learning to swim, then to dive. After litter picking on the beach with Jack and Solomon, they find a turtle in distress and Lucy finds out that the plastic and rubbish left on the beach pose a serious threat to the creatures in the ocean.
Information about the different creatures, snorkelling and diving are woven into the story making this a great start to a series for children that are interested in oceans and animals. At the back of the book there’s more information and photos of the marine life featured in the book. It’s great to see Lucy progress through the story, from not wanting to move away from her friends and neighbours to making friends, getting a job helping out at the dive centre, overcoming her fear of water and making a difference to Pontus.
Lucy is a great role model to young readers that you can make a difference to your community. I think it was also interesting to see the parallel between Lucy and Emily. Lucy was hesitant when she first meets the locals, but quickly gets settled within the community, whereas Emily stays very detached with her life at the consulate.
I think this shows the difference in what can be discovered with a more open mind and curiosity when moving to a new place. Eye of the Turtle is a great start to a series for eco-conscious readers.
