The latest in Anthony Kessel’s thrilling detective-story-plus series sees Edie, fresh from receiving the George Cross for gallantry, investigating her Jewish family’s history and drawing on the strength and wisdom of her still much-missed mum to uncover corruption and evil even at the heart of the British government.
Her mum had been investigating the possibility that the German army had stolen artwork from the family during the war. Edie manages to find out more and on a trip to Poland with her father, brother and grandparents, uses her detecting abilities and courage to discover what turns out to be evidence of the crime.
Following it up further puts her in real danger as she realises there are Nazi-sympathisers in the highest offices in the land. As ever, she is helped and supported by her friends, especially boyfriend Harry, sweet and steely as required, and by her MI5 agent friend, but all the risks she takes herself.
The story includes flashbacks to the 1940s and we learn about the bravery of Edie’s great-aunt who stood up against the Nazis. All in all, it is another thrilling read and builds to an explosive climax, while readers can also follow Edie’s mum’s methods on coping with psychological stress.
