Ed Vere was one of the creators, along with Charlotte Hacking , of the CLPE Power of Pictures Programme , which supports schools to uncover the value and creative capacity of picturebooks and demonstrates the importance of drawing, illustration and creativity for children’s reading and writing. Vere’s expressive visual language is a prime example of this – we can read so much story in the characters’ body language, facial expressions, opposing colour schemes, and proximity on the page.
No Hugs Please! serves as an early introduction to themes of consent, boundaries and autonomy for very young children. Waffles is well-meaning but persistent, and oblivious to Julius’ clear statements of “no” – he eventually apologises, and a gentle happy ending shows reconciliation and respect between the friends.
This empathetic story is also very, very funny! A hilarious text to share and read aloud with Early Years and above, with opportunities to join in and offer commentary on the characters’ actions. The loveable Waffles and Julius join such odd-couple favourites as Bear and Bird , I’m Sticking With You and Frog and Toad.

Ed Vere studied fine art at Camberwell College of Art and has been writing and illustrating children's books since 1999. He is published in both England and the US. Ed is also a painter, working from his studio in East London and is represented by galleries in London and Los Angeles. After a year and a half living in Barcelona, Ed now lives and works in London.
