Part of a super-sweet series that couldn’t be more purr-fect for 5+-year-olds who are beginning to read more independently, Paula Harrison’s Kitty and the Moonflower Mystery sees aspiring super-hero Kitty, a girl with secret “cat-like superpowers just like her mum”, enjoy a pre-bedtime book called Fantastic Flowers.
Soon after, Figaro, one of Kitty’s cats, realises that their silver comb has gone missing, and so Kitty and her fur-ball friends retrace Figaro’s paws to try to find the comb, also taking advantage of the fact that the nearby botanical gardens is hosting an exhibition of rare plants, including a moonflower that “looked really magical with three large white petals that glowed brightly in the moonlight”.
After using her super-powers to gain access to the botanical gardens, Kitty and her faithful feline friends discover that the moonflower has gone missing, which leads them to investigate a mystery that shimmers with evocative storytelling that’s perfectly-pitched for 5+-year-olds who love magic, with striking two-colour illustrations from Jenny Løvlie adding to the enchanting, gently adventurous atmosphere.
The purrrfect series for newly confident readers, beautifully illustrated by Waterstones Children's Book Prize winner, Jenny L¢vlie, and written by bestselling author, Paula Harrison.

Kitty is a superhero-in-training with feline superpowers. She dreams of being just like her superhero mum one day, but she's still got a lot to learn. Join her for a series of enchanting adventures by the light of the moon. It's night-time at the Botanical Gardens. Kitty and her cat crew are there to catch a glimpse of the new rare flowers exhibition.
But someone has stolen the prize exhibit: the exotic moonflower, with its beautiful glowing petals that shine like the moon! If it isn't found soon it might not survive, so Kitty must use her cat-like powers to find the thief and save the moonflower just in the nick of time. Kitty and the Moonflower Mystery is the seventeenth book in the Kitty series, featuring a charming main character, cat-packed exploits, and striking two-colour art on every page.
‘Jenny Løvlie sets an incredible scene with her dramatic black and orange illustrations on almost every page’ - Kirkus Reviews
Paula Harrison began inventing stories and writing them down as a child. One of her best was about a magical land inhabited by talking bookworms. After taking an English degree, she became a primary school teacher and is now married with two children. She loves inspiring children's imaginations and believes that day-dreaming can be a really good use of your time (although she hasn't actually said that during a lesson). Over the years, she's shared many different authors' books with children, and now she can't wait to share her own.
Paula says: “The beginnings of the idea for The Rescue Princesses came when I watched my daughters playing. They were racing around the garden pretending to be Princesses who could go anywhere and do anything they liked. That set me thinking: in a world where anything is possible, Princesses won’t be sitting around on thrones. They’ll be out there, proving they’re better than the Princes!”
Paula Harrison is the author of Red Moon Rising (for older readers) and The Rescue Princesses (a younger series). She wanted to be a writer from a young age but spent many happy years being a primary school teacher first. She finds inspiration in lots of things from cloud shapes to snippets of conversation. She loves sandy beaches and eating popcorn. She lives with her husband and children in Buckinghamshire, which is nowhere near the sea. Whenever possible, she packs her family into the car and journeys far and wide to find a sandy beach where she can paddle in the waves.

A great short chapter book with easy-to-like characters, gentle adventure and lovely illustrations. Perfect for young readers moving from picture books to chapter books who enjoy mysteries, stories about friendship and, obviously, cats!
I haven't read any books from Pamela Harrison's Kitty series before, so this was my first introduction to Kitty and her adventures. The first chapter clearly introduces the characters and the fantasy world, so it doesn't matter if you haven't read any of the previous books. The adventure starts quickly, with plenty of action to keep younger readers engaged from the start. Kitty is a superhero in training, and this book follows Kitty and her cat friends as she sets out to solve the mystery of some special moonflowers that keep disappearing before they have the chance to bloom. This is a great book to bridge the gap between picture books and longer chapter books, making it suitable for independent readers aged 6+ while also being a lovely book to share with younger children....
