Readers will undoubtedly also love robot Niyx - her human emotions, especially her exasperation and anger with her evil brother and his nefarious machinations, make her entirely relatable and a joy to read.
With space pirates, evil villains and tested friendships this is an ideal read for young thrill seekers. There is plenty of scope for further adventures and I’m already hoping that this is the start of an exciting new series.

Kol and Sully are best friends living miserable lives as rustheads - treasure hunters who must search planet Rust's vast desert of scrap for useful odds and ends. But everything changes when the boys stumble upon a long-dormant spaceship hidden deep beneath the junk.
When the ship comes to life and propels them away to deep space, they find out that they are not the only ones on board. A mysterious girl is there too, and she has a mission: free the galaxy from the oppressive rule of the robotic Reaper empire. Before they know it, Kol and Sully are dragged into a galaxy-spanning adventure.

Ross MacKenzie is a multi- award-winning author of books for children. His highly-acclaimed Nowhere Emporium trilogy has won numerous accolades including the Blue Peter Book Award and the Scottish Children's Book Award. His other books include Shadowsmith, the Evernight series, The Colour of Hope and The Uninvited.
Ross lives in Renfrew, Scotland, with his wife and two daughters, but spends much of his time in another world.
A Q&A with Ross about his novel The Nowhere Emporium
Where did your inspiration for The Nowhere Emporium come from?
It’s a bit mysterious, actually! The Emporium sort of popped into my head fully formed. I could see this strange old shop so clearly in my head, the sparkling black brick and the faded sign. I knew the shop never stayed in one place for very long, and of course I had to find out why, so I wrote the story.
What is your favourite room in the Nowhere Emporium?
Actually, my favourite place in the entire Emporium is the shop-front where Daniel first meets Mr Silver. It’s dim and dusty and mysterious, filled with so many treasures and curiosities. I could spend days looking around!
What would you write in the Book of Wonders?
I’d have a library with every story ever written waiting on the shelves for me. But it would be a library with a twist: I’d be able to meet the characters from my favourite books face to face! Actually, on second thought, this might turn out to be dangerous – the bad guys would probably try to escape and take over the world!
