This collection of 18 short stories have a classic feel. Featuring perilous voyages, magical mysteries, encounters with the supernatural and a strong emphasis on the natural world. Each story is distinct in structure and style, whether it’s focusing on a young grey seal that becomes separated from her family and must find her way home, or a strange red-light emitting lighthouse that draws young Aletha to it.
This would be a great collection for readers who enjoy magical stories centred on the sea and coastal locations. I found the writing focused more on telling than showing which meant it wasn’t as easy to connect with the stories, but it was an understandable choice in the context of these shorter narratives.
Of all the stories I particularly liked the unique structure of Shore Horizons. It felt almost poetic and I liked how it moved through a collage of different perspectives, each providing a snapshot reflecting on the environment, its past and its future. In all an interesting collection of stories that would suit anyone looking for classical feeling stories with a maritime theme.
The ocean is more than just water and salt. It is a world of ancient secrets, shimmering bioluminescence, and the legendary Sea Faeries who keep the balance of the deep. In Sea Flames: Sea Faerie Tales, the hidden mysteries of the abyss come to life through a collection of stories that blend nautical folklore with modern heart.
Follow Aletha, a courageous sea faerie who dares to venture beyond the safety of the Crystal Cave to face the shadows threatening her home. Journey to the glowing branches of the Salt Tree, navigate the treacherous currents near the Great Lighthouse, and discover why even the mightiest whales and most elusive oarfish look to the faeries for guidance.
This anthology weaves together themes of environmental wonder and timeless bravery. From the delicate beauty of the Sea Flower to the vast horizons where the water meets the sky, these tales invite readers of all ages to rediscover the magic of the natural world.
